Lithium Battery Safety – Questions Answered

There is more and more media coverage regarding lithium battery fires recently. We thought customers would find it helpful to give you answers so that you are able to provide answers for your customers who may be anxious.

Our batteries are LiFePO4 and not NMC and this makes a huge difference to safety and the life of the battery overall. Not all manufacturers use LiFePO4 so do check with your supplier.
“It turns out that rechargeable LiFePO4 batteries and NMC batteries, even in their most basic form, perform very differently and have different characteristics. LiFePO4 batteries are lithium-ion batteries that use safer chemistry than their cousins, the conventional lithium-iron or lithium-nickel-cobalt batteries. They often have a longer lifespan and don’t require the use of expensive materials and mining processes.”

Secondly, all of our batteries have a BMS inside (Battery Management System) which controls the charging from the charger through to the cells. This BMS is not present in the E-Scooters etc that are catching fire. These use very cheap chargers to directly charge the cells.

It is the charging cycle that is the point at which overheating can happen, never in the discharge phase, unless of course the battery was damaged in some way. Our BMS also has two TCO’s (Thermal cut out) modules in every battery. These are fuses that will stop any supply going into the cells if the internal temperature of the battery were to reach 65C (the temperature of a hot radiator in your home).

TORBERRY LEAD CONNECTORS;.

Most Trolleys have red/black leads as standard on their trolley inc Motocaddy who with their ‘later’ models have blue/black torberry connectors. We would just like to mention that blue/black and powakaddy’s yellow/black torberry’s are exactly the same as the industry standard red/black as red goes to blue or yellow and black to black when fitted.(these 2 companies changed there colour torberry leads connections to ‘trick’ customers that ‘may think’ they can only buy from them), Which is NOT the case.(Stewart Golf also do this)

OLDER TROLLEYS; Please be aware that certain older well used electric trolleys ‘can’ in certain circumstances take out too many ‘amps’ that ‘can’ drag down any battery let alone a Lithium battery.We would like to make customers aware of this fact as at the very least the bigger milage battery will always give protection for any older well used machine that does do this.
